Android phones have revolutionized the market of Smartphones. The fact is that the operating system which has led the rise of android in global market. It’s low cost OS, handy devices with large app market, open source platform with third party softwares etc. has made Android a common name. Android was initially launched in 2008. It is based on Linux kernel, which is primarily designed for mobile computers (Smartphones and tablets). The moment it was introduced into the market, it proved to be challenge to the other OS giants. Soon, it became a household name and many mobile device manufacturers jumped on it for their mobile devices including LG, Samsung, HTC, Lenovo, Motorola, Sony etc. In less than eight years it captured whole the mobile phone market becoming world’s most popular Smartphone platform.
Early Days
Android Inc was founded in Palo Alto, California, in October 2003. The foundation was laid to focus on developing a smart operating system for the digital cameras. Android is an open source OS. It releases it code under the Apache License. Android kept on working silently and secretly on a mobile operating system without being in news. During those years, its biggest competitors in market were Symbian and the Windows Phones. Apple had not launched iOS at that time. Later on in 2005, Android was acquired completely by Google and became a subsidiary of Google. After 2 years of acquisition, Google announced the development of Android based OS. Google launched its devices in 2010 of Nexus series. After it Android caught attention in the market of Operating Systems. It gained popularity as an OS for tablets and Smartphones. After it, android kept on releasing its versions. The basic first version was Android 1.0. The present Android version is Kitkat. Android has announced its next version Lollipop.
The Market of Android
Another OS giant was Apple. But in third quarter of 2012, Android received one of the biggest achievements of its success. Samsung’s android enabled Smartphone Galaxy S III outshined the Apple’s iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. It happened for the first time that any single android phone defeated out any iPhone in terms of pure sales. International Data Corporation has reported that iPhone lost its ground in the global market as it didn't release any new model in the market, which powered the presence of Google’s android software. It has also stated that the Android Smartphones’ shipments grew to over 211 million in the July to September period of the same year proving out to be a good stride forward. The report by IDC says that geographically China and the Asia regions are major growth location for phones. Distimo says that Android has dominance in the China and parts of Asia. And average android phone costs near about $200 whereas the iPhone goes around $600. The Android share in the Smartphone market received a significant 81% growth.
Android is supported by all the major network carriers in USA. The Verizon proved to be an important factor in the sales. It also launched a campaign for the Android OS devices. Motorola launched Motorola Droid with Verizon. This marketing strategy boosted up Android sales.
Key Reasons for Success
Android has outshined the whole mobile phone market. There are various factors which are responsible for its success, though there are other operating systems such as iOS, Windows available in the market. Android supports almost mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, LG, Lenovo, Sony, Asus, Motorola, Dell etc. It is open source and provides supports to multiple networks (Especially in USA, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint etc). Android is not only limited to mobiles phones. The operating system has been developed for other devices and is being used in HDTV, cars, cameras etc. Soon, there will be use of android operating system in hospitals and in scientific instruments and equipments. A great factor is that it is open for application softwares. Its low cost with better hardware and software made it in reach of everyone. The open source has customized the third party developers which made it handy, flexible and got peoples’ attention. Innovation is another factor which leads Android in the market. It keeps on revising and modifying its apps and softwares which has proved to be the product improvement strategy.
