Introducing street safe Project in Buxton:

The mission of street safe is development of youth and initiating safety, which is designed to reduce violence among the young groups, in neighborhoods of Buxton and in the Buxton town center, which is underhandedly affected in a tenacious way by extremely huge number of crimes, antisocial and illegal activities.

A new Street Safe project is launched to reduce anti-social behavior in Buxton town centre.

Derbyshire Constabulary and the High Peak Community Safety Partnership, which asked for student volunteers from the University of Derby Students’ Union to support police on regular nights out in the town, supported the initiative

The task of volunteers were to help reducing anti-social behavior and levels of noise caused by people enjoying themselves on weekends in the town center, and aim to make the town centre a safer place by being in constant communication with door staff, police officers and support workers.

One fundamental part of the project was introducing designated Safe Spots in the town, where volunteers can take people for free drinking water and to call a friend or taxi, free of charge.

According to Student Union’s Vice-President: Welfare & Student Rights, Heather Morgan: “This project is a brilliant opportunity for students to directly support one another whilst being active members of their community in Buxton.

“We really do hope that members of the community will embrace the good work which students are able to carry out whilst at University.”

After the initial 12 month period, the project aims could be expanded to include Home Safety, aiming to reduce the number of crimes committed against students and raise awareness of crime prevention.

I got a chance to involve myself with the project as a part of my coursework. I was appointed as a volunteer, and felt valued to be a part of it!

Purpose of street safe: The purpose of street safe is to make the town center free form anti socials, reducing noise caused by people enjoying in the weekend nights, above all helping the people in trouble.

The work culture of the organization is very encouraging and refreshing and allows participants to apply their knowledge and skill, under guidance of experts, and ethics is highly valued here. This taught me the value of ethics, which I think is going to be very helpful in future for me.

Core strategies:

The target was set to develop a huge number of highly trained and skilled sets of volunteers to develop an interconnection and alliance with people,police and other support staffs, to reconcile in time of violent activities, negotiate and settle down conflicts, and bridge the gap between police, people, students and other street workers by creating a strong association.

Modus Operandi of Street Safe:

The purpose of street safe is to reduce anti social behaviour in the town center, controlling noise and helping people in trouble. The main aspect of the work lies between to make the town a safer place without eliminating the enjoyment of others. The fundamental role of a volunteer was to act as a communicator and bridge the gap between door staff, police officers, support workers, and general people.

The main roles were:

  • Liaising with the lead volunteer regarding volunteer shifts and role expectations.
  • Attending student’s night at particular areas in buxton to help students to go home safely.
  • Coordinating with door supervisors to make it clear that students are well aware of the legal implications of anti-social and drunk and disorderly behaviour.
  • Liaisioning with the police service and community support officers to notify them of antisocial, drunk, and disorderly behaviour.
  • Giving water bottles, which reduce the risk of hangover and help them to rehydrate.
  • Providing students with ‘Spikeys’, which are placed in the tops of bottles to prevent drinks getting spiked.
  • Offering Flip-flops to girls who take off high-heeled shoes for the walk to home.
  • Giving out Space blankets to people who are in extremely cold
  • Supporting those who are deemed at risk in getting home
  • Providing Basic First Aid through working with trained First Aid providers.
  • Helping individuals get home by providing them with directions back to halls, maps and taxi , phone numbers

  • Work with the Primary Care Trust and Police to deliver preventative work highlighting the dangers of binge drinking

Time commitment

Approx 2 hours per ‘shift’ per week was assigned duty, besides I had to work for the said activities whenever required. Additional 1 hour catch ups with the Street Safe Buxton Lead Volunteer on a fortnightly basis or as required.

People who work there feel extremely valued as they are helping people in trouble. Also the leaders in each assignment were very clear, specific and composed in their way of allocating responsibility, delegation of authority, and extremely good communicators who managed to coordinate among various group members and get the things done effectively and efficiently.

Things We Learned:

The main aim of this project was reducing antisocial by encouraging responsible

behaviour of students, promoting awareness through socializing, integrating with the local community, act according to the demand of situation, facing unmet situation and develop plan for acting in emergency situation, using equipments like transmission radio, learning safety measures for personal safety etc.

Self-awareness:  It is important to be conscious about self-existence. We learned to use our self as witness to police, patrol map and use our routes. Self-awareness and its importance were of high priority, because in critical situation one must save him or her to save others.

We also learned to use Pub watch radio, which provided us direct link to students, police, local pubs, and security staffs.

We learned to identify critical situation, locate disturbed zone, withdrawing from too much disturbed a place, and call for assistance.

   Using Radio: The radios used by Street Safe are the same as the ones on BRAC

(Boxton Retailers Against Crime), and the local pub watch members. To use this kind of radio it should be ensured to push the talk button for 2 seconds, and also at the end of transmission. This ensures that none of the message is cut off.  (See complete: Selenium Analysis)

Here is a scenario, which we faced while working and observed the impact of positive and negative work place relationship, and how it helps in demanding situations with the aspect of customer relationship.

We saw a group of four persons having a heated debate, in midway, we approached quickly, and tried to control. One of our team members suddenly commented taking one side, and the debate was spread within us. Instead of stopping them we involved in heated discussion within ourselves, and it gave rise to a chaotic situation.

Our team leader came and separated us, and advised us to stay away from the discussion. Our main objective was to stop the argument but as we got divided in the process, because of our different view of looking into a particular aspect, the whole idea was disturbed and turned out to be a more violent situation.

After few days working in the project we were trying to accommodate ourselves with the working process and learning professionalism, i.e. a,b,c of forming a group and perform actively.

Another day on patrol we saw an intoxicated female, crying and been seek. We rushed to her, offering help, but she was unable to tell anything. We were four in-group, we decided who should do what in a minute. One of us was trying to make her drink water, and splashing water in her face to get into sense. Another one rushed to police. I was searching for a nearest safe place, and brought her to a safe zone. We called her home and informed police, to help her to get back to home.

Management Practice:

Management is to get the things done with minimum resource possible, effectively and efficiently Koontz Harold and Weihrich Heinz, 1989). In this current project the main idea which stroke my mind is that better service can be provided to people by better communication, generating awareness.

Creating a Group: When two or more persons interact with each other in such a fashion that they influence and affect each other’s behavior and performance the interaction and association between them is termed as a GROUP. Every one must feel their individual importance, personal identity, and integrity with other group members through Generating Discussion, Developing new ideas, continuous performance monitoring, motivating and encouraging.

Managing Human resources:  According to Michael Armstrong (1998) Human Resources are the most vital component in an organization.

As it is a new domain of work, people need to be well accustomed to the coming scenario, before the actual job is to be done.

Some new recruitment can be done based on requirements of job preferably who have similar kind of exposures in other organizations.

Proper training and monitoring is needed at each step.

Promote Safety while Socializing

Awareness is the most important factor in servicing people.This can be done by various campaigns, awareness programme, organizing seminars, encouraging debates, and discussion.

  1. Identifying Target Population: the target population must be identified and segmented.
  2. Drawing a Strategy: The proposition of the campaign should be drafted according to the keynote of the issue, depending upon the researches, and axioms of the programme.
  3. Generating Messages: Creative and contemporary messages should be developed on the ground of the proposed programme which can be applied through posters, banners, advertisements, audio jingles, booklets, pamphlets etc.
  1. Implementation: The programme of campaigning can be planned depending on the comprehension of the messages. The media materials should be ready at time of campaign.
  1. Monitoring: It is necessary to carefully monitor the implementation and impact of the campaign to ensure that th efull participation of the target group is achieved, and the materials have been circulated.

The dimensions of community integration need visionary and operational definitions. The purpose of community integration is to amplify the concept of community participation and integration. Analysis of community participation indicates that community participation has more or less five angles: psychological, interpersonal networks, city versus groups, localism versus cosmopolitanism, and city versus neighborhood.   • The distribution of service should be equitable.
  • To integrate with the local community proper communication is needed. Local people must be made well aware of the plan of the work.
  • Some areas to be identified prior to the action is taking place and mark them as a safe spot.
  • Some areas are needed to be identified as a spot for taking a break from work, also a place for planning a different mode of action if situation demands.

After the group is formed and come to the “Performing stage”, it is now called as “TEAM”. Creating a perfect team can be achieved through proper guidance and direction-a high quality leadership.

A Project manager needs to be an effective leader to make the team perform well.

Developing a Work flowPlan:

It has become the corner stone of many organizations; it is one of the method for scheduling tasks and reaching towards objectives. Certain things are required for a successful blue print of a project:

 Structural and infra-structural changes comes under purview of strategic management and planning.

  • Tactical planning: It is based on tactics, i.e. what to do in a limited period of time, helping people to be accustomed to unseen changes and react to the situation.
  • Cyclical Planning: It is based on the continuity of the events, i.e. it deals with the regular operations, activities to be performed on a holiday etc.
  • Daily Planning: deals with operations that must be done on a day to day basis, and  must be within a small time   frame.
  • Contingency planning: deals with measures or actions taken or foreseen in an unforeseen situation.
  • MBO- management by objective: According to Harold Koonz, on management principles and practice, MBO is a process to achieve organizational goals, encouraging employee commitment and willful participation. It facilitates transition of basic concepts into management practice.

Crisis management: It deals with crisis situation and ultimately results in mastering in foreseeing any crisis situation and prevents it before it takes place.

Contributing to the Workplace:

This idea was entirely mine and I thought of it while working in the streets. Many situations came in practical when we felt helpless, even; our safety was at stake some times.

I suggested my team leader to provide us with some kind of simulation exercises. As the overall project is to help people in crisis situation, some simulation exercises can be practiced prior to the events are taking place, in time of framing a plan of action.

SIMULATION:  Regarding simulation Shubik has said, A simulation of a system or an organism is the functioning of a system model or simulator which is a representation of the system or organism. The model can be manipulated, and pliable, which would be impossible, too expensive or unpracticed to perform on the entity it delineates. The operation of the model can be studied and for it, properties concerning the behaviour of the actual system can be conjectured and assumed.

Simulation is to assume the mere appearance of, without the reality.

Simulation is a procedure to perform experiments often regulated by a set of criteria. The experiments are done on a system, which is designed on the basis of a real model, to understand the response and behaviour in a certain scenario.

The aims of Simulation is to raise awareness, increase coordination between interdepartmental and intradepartmental activities, connectivity and close liaison between local statutory services, and state disaster response force.


  • Simulation means a range of scenario based crisis simulation exercises, customized to meet organization’s unique situation ant team’s learning objectives.
  • There should be a crisis management team (CMT).
  • The crisis simulation exercises are generally classroom-based exercises involving crisis management team that allow theoretical testing of response to imaginary incidents.

Advantages of SIMULATION:

  • Existing systems can be studied and it does not disturb the ongoing operation.
  • Proposed systems can be tested before allocation of resources is done.
  • Helps to minimize time.
  • Helps to identify bottlenecks.
  • Identifying those variables, which are particularly important to system performance. 

Purpose of simulation:

  • It validates plans.
  • Allow learning in a safe and risk free environment under expert
  • Guidance.
  • Raise awareness and increase coordination.
  • The best way to test immediate responses to a sudden and
  • debilitating situation. 

Why Simulation is needed:

This is of prime importance because experiencing a problem scenario is needed to manage actual crisis, or it will be very hard for anybody to bring it back on rails.

  • Helps in sharpening managerial decision-making skills.
  • Provides insights into a certain managerial problems.
  • It has potential to expand or compose time
  • Ability to control  resources.
  • Ability to check in every step, by Stop and Review method.
  • It can restore system state.
  • Also facilitates replication.

 Process of Implementation of Plan:

CMT starts with an Ad hoc model where intent is to get the suited people together if an emergency situation comes and how to deal with it.

 I devised some simulation game or role play exercises and offered it to our team leader, where we divided ourselves into different groups, and used the guidelines and equipments provided to us.

The main aim was to act calmly in an unplanned, emergency situation. We also involved students, and other professional, along with police, and support staffs, to create a false scenario, making it look like just a real life situation and we acted accordingly.

Promoting Workplace:

Promoting the social media service centre must be innovative and unique in its approach.

Door to door campaigns, awareness programme, publicity and advertisements, generating social message can be used as a marketing tool.

Today it is a world where globalization has its own impact on everything even on business globalization, and group task is getting prime importance. Also flexibility in time and work schedule has increased, and it is beneficial to both companies and employees. All these processes contribute to the workforce getting fragmented, and reduce the chances of conflict. But there is always a chance for the people becoming more unaware of colleague’s activities. These gaps in awareness often result in opportunities, which are missed, for concoction and coordination of one with other for better sharing of knowledge and ideas. What we are trying today is designing a system model to find the communication gap, and promote a stronger awareness of job related activities, by the use of tangential devices.

Mapping Workplace Experience: To the Programme

The workplace experience was huge and I found it very applicable in my life, and to the course of study.

We have learnt to apply communication as a tool to generate awareness, to reach out to service urgently, maintaining records and databases, building network of activities and keep in contact with the governing body like Police, support staffs, people, students and connection between group members, how to call for assistance, etc.

Here I will talk about another scenario where some students got involved with some unknown persons and got engaged in fighting. I was alone at that point of time and I thought for a few seconds about what I can do in this situation. The situation was already violent and I thought it would not be wise to get into the scene right now, and I hide myself from that place, but continued observing from a distance. I pushed the radio button for two seconds or more and informed police, and my friends. Before the police came some of my friends arrived and we ran to the group. We tried to stop him and divided them. We took the two groups two different safe zones, and offered water. Two three of them were severely injured. We provided with minimum first aids and I took them to hospitals. Police came and my friends contacted their home, and drove them to their homes.

A major part of this experience is developing your community and development of youth.

Community Improvement: It encompasses a wide range of activities, which are included in academics and are applied in practices of social activists, involved people with the particular programme, and other people, to develop communities. It empowers individuals and group, by training them with education and different skills to improve their communities.

Building Community capacity is a bit different from community development. Community building and community engagement comes under purview of community development.

Developing community through more and more awareness programme, communication at personal level, counseling, equitable distribution of services.

Youth development:According to Pittman, (1993,p 8) The advancing process of maturation to engage all youth in achieving personal and social needs, to secure basic physiological need, safety, social belongingness, aquire social identity, and value for themselves, feel spiritually uplifted and adds value to both in his life and to the society by building skills and upgrading knowledge, to function and to dedicate service.

During our course of action we got to meet various kinds of students and young professionals. We tried to convince them about the ill effect of drinking, engaging in antisocial activities by counseling and personal communication. We tried to identify their problems, and help them accordingly. Some anger management sessions were also arranged, and we tried to help them out by various psychometric tests, to know their personalities better, so that they can work on their week points and convert them to their strong points.

Personal Development Plan:

In this scenario I may have to implement certain new thoughts and ideas. According to my view, handling a project and being a good project manager depends upon not only

Hard work but also SMART WORK!!I have to make the employees feel that they are working in a safe and homely environment.

I learned the basics of interpersonal skills, like controlling voice and tone of voice, how to delegate, making presentation, how to develop leadership qualities, etc.

According to S.P.Robbins, the approaches in Leadership may be changed to Transformational from Transactional in such a scenario where the system is new and training and development is required at a large scale to adapt with the changing scenario and huge expectations from both the side of offered of the service and beneficiaries.

Professional credibility

Credibility is believability and plausibility. It can’t be gained or acquired through the position in our workplace or the title of the job or the brand name of the company in which we are working. It is the most important and challenging characteristics one should earn to gain reliability and respect. It determines the rigidity of one’s character and professional credibility is a fundamental thing to make someone important to the organization.

Working in this project I learned to be trustworthy, reliable, and competent to our colleagues, managers and beneficiaries. We learned to be integrated in our work, maintain a healthy relationship with our colleagues, be punctual and finishing the assigned job in time, be at service of the people, whenever needed.

Evaluation of Personal Progress and Development:

The   project work brings the student face to face with the real corporate world. This is the time when one learns what the industry practices are and do the practices really follow what is really taught in the classroom. Further it gives an excellent chance to the students to apply the concepts in the real world.

Application of CONCEPTS, TOOLS and skills.

Working as a volunteer in Street Safe, provided me a good opportunity to apply the concepts, tools and techniques learnt at my university, in the real life situations. Starting from assessment of the project requirements, clarification of the project objectives to the systematic analysis of the situation all needs the application of these. Such as we learnt simulation in our course only in a theoretical way, but here I applied it successfully. The skills of quantitative analysis, preparing a project plan, implementing it, developing new ideas helped me a lot to circumvent in the demanded situations.


It was a day-to-day encounter with an organization and that too dealing directly with people,in emergency situation. I got to learn how an organization works, the value of ethics, the decorum needed to sustain in an organization.

Working with Street Safe gave me tremendous exposure to the Non Profit Making Sectors the mind-set of people, the nature of work, and various helps offered by it etc. This was of immense help, as prior to this experience, I was not aware of this kind of work, and its services and its importance in such great depth.

Due to the nature of the project I had to interact with different kinds of people extensively. It helped me immensely to understand the basics of offering a service.

I learnt how important it is to be at service of people, risking life in demanding situation, still managing a way for personal safety, and be at people’s service.


My project was essentially a study of people, be at their services when needed. I had to, due to this reason; interact with a huge number of people, and people from different backgrounds. Often I felt need to consult to various personnel in the office, ask questions to them and reveal their knowledge, experience, suggestions out of any situation. In this way I also developed interpersonal relationship with my project guide and other colleagues in Street Safe. Also I had developed a rapport with staff members during the period. Especially the management team was very helpful and most of the time I was in contact with them.

The work culture here is very refreshing and doesn’t put employees under much pressure, but ethics is very highly valued there.  This taught me the value of ethics, which I think is going to be very helpful in future for me


This training helped me to realize the importance of each and every aspect of a situation. I realized that even though practical knowledge is very necessary, one cannot do without the theory part which forms the base. I came to know no matter in which department one is, one needs to have knowledge of each and every field. The functioning of any service does not solely depend on mode of work but everything should be in a balanced manner. This has led me to give importance to everything in life as everything has its own importance.
