PROJ6000 Principles of Project Management Assignment
I undertook a project in a paint company during a two-month internship program. The name of the organization is DuPont. The structure of the company was that the company would provide work that was received by the company through its call center and distribute it among the painters in return the painters will be buying the paint of that company to do the job. The detail of the painters would be with the company.
The company had introduced some painting tools and a mobile application to help the painters. The painting tools would help the painters to paint cleanly and the mobile application would help the painter in showing
The survey was conducted in the area that was under the particular depot in which I had done my internship. It included 3 pin codes in a city. The survey was to be conducted in the office of painter or in any other place but it has to be made sure that the interview is conducted face to face and not over the phone.
Deliverables Schedule: One survey was to be conducted in an hour. Each interview should last at least 20 minutes. 7 surveys a day was minimum requirement for the company.
Period of Performance: The work was to be conducted in a period of 2 months. The dates were 1st December to 31st January. The working hours were from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Sundays. 42 hours per week has to be billed per week. An hour of break was allowed as lunch time
Payment was to be done at the end of the two months internship program. The travel receipts have to be kept with the intern which has to be presented at the end of the internship program. The money will be refunded after producing the receipts and payment for the internship can also be done at the end of the program.
There were no sub-contractors in the program. The interns were supposed to complete the survey on their own.
There was a project guide assigned to each of the interns. The interns were to report to them at the end of each days of work.
Risks and Assumptions:
The risk in this case is the fact that lot of travelling is to be done and the office and home location of the painters have to located.
Assumption is to be done that each painter will cooperate in conducting the interview and the painters are digitally literate. In primary data accumulation there is always a risk of personal bias creeping into the project.
The paint company and the interns are the stakeholders in this program.
Applicable Standards: All the questions mentioned were to be answered. It was not allowed to keep blank spaces. The name and detail of the painter along with a picture clicked and uploaded in the spot was must.
Acceptance Criteria: The time of conversation should be 20 minutes and the photo has to be uploaded at the spot and question forms should be duly filled up that was the minimum criteria that needed to be fulfilled. In case any of the points didn’t matched the survey will not be considered and the surveyor has to take other appointments to fulfill the daily quota.
Special Requirements or out of scope items: The minimum qualification of the interns was to be graduates. No experience was required. Training was provided for the first 2 days to use the software application and to make the interns aware of the quality requirements of the company. Daily travelling allowance was provided because there was travelling requirements. The company provided a phone to contact the painters to fix appointments.
Methods of Project Selection
There are two basic methods used to select a project within an organization; benefit measurement method and the constraint optimization method. The benefit measurement method calculates the current condition of the company regarding its cash inflow and outflow, the cost of undertaking the project and the possible benefit from the project. The constrained optimization method is a quantitative method of selecting a project. This is often undertaken in case of large and complicated projects where it is difficult to measure profitability easily. (Rose, 2013)
A business case justifies a project that is to be undertaken. It justifies the expenditure incurred in the project with the possible commercial benefit that the company will reap. A project without a business case will have no cost benefit analysis. As a result, the expenditure that will be done by the business in undergoing through the project may eventually cause the company to face financial losses. That is why it cannot be considered feasible to undergo a project without a business case. (Patanakul, Iewwongcharoen & Milosevic, 2010)
