However, patients with mental health disorders have seemed to have posed a threat to the ethical policies of nurses all across the globe. As supported byAnderson et al.(2015), mental health patients are often indulged in harming the confidentiality of others. Therefore, this becomes a major issue for the nurses to look after that the confidentiality and safety of other patients in an organization are well maintained. Moreover, as criticized byStorch et al.(2013), it might also happen that a healthcare organization has decided to terminate the behavior of a patient with mental disorder. However, he might refuse to agree to the fact. Therefore, another difficulty that the nurses face is the threat posed to other patients because of a mentally disordered patient. Therefore, it can be analyzed from this that it is extremely important for the nurses to look after the patients with mental disorders and to ensure that they do not indulge into any harmful activities which might harm themselves and others as well.
Moreover, in a study conducted by Anonson et al.(2014), it has been revealed that the lack of nursing practitioners equipped with knowledge of mental health is also a major issue. As supported byBender, Connelly and Brown (2013), nearly 2% of the total nursing practitioners are there who have knowledge of mental health of their patients. Therefore, it can be analyzed from this that the lack of nursing practitioners in mental health care makes it difficult for them to carry on with the planning procedure of the treatment where the nurses are needed to make proper plans for the therapy of the patients, their counseling, self-care activities and medications. As opposed byMasters (2015), the issue of the assessment of the outcome of mental health treatment is also a crucial issue. It becomes extremely difficult for the nurses to isolate themselves from interventions which produce specific client outcomes. Therefore, it can be analyzed from this that the inefficiency of the nurses also poses a great challenge in healthcare for mental health.
At the very beginning, the nurses entrusted with the activity of looking after mentally disordered people should ensure that they are well equipped with the knowledge of mental health of the patients. In order to pursue this, the healthcare organizations can give training to the nurses regarding the practices which might be adhered to while taking care of a mentally disordered patient. Along with that, the healthcare organizations must also provide training to the nurses to deal with the patients with mental illness. In the opinion of Levett-Jones and Bourgeois (2015), it is very common that the mental patients often become hostile towards others, thereby, ending in harming them. This should be checked by the nurses and they should bear the skill of calming the patients.
Moreover, a mental health nurse should also possess great communication skill both verbal and nonverbal. The verbal communication processes include instructions, guidance to the patients. Moreover, as stated by Anderson et al.(2015), nurses dealing with mentally disordered people must know the use of the right words for the patients to respond and understand. Nurses should never use offensive words which shall harm the sentiments of the patients and they become hostile. Moreover, nurses should always opt for calmative voices in situations when the situation is adverse or when the patients turn antagonistic. In addition to that, a nurse should also possess non-verbal communication skills to understand the behavioral aspect of the patients suffering from mental illness and should drive a positive posture and expression (Professional standards, 2017). The tracking of the behavioral cues of the patients shall make it easy for the nurses to understand the behavior of the patients and more importantly, take the necessary strategies for dealing with the patient in the most effective way.
Another most important factor that psychiatric nurses must abide by is the efficient usage of the therapeutic communication techniques. As stated by Storch et al.(2013), this communication tools are used by the nurses to heal the patients in the aspect of their mental state which shall contribute much to the betterment of the health of the patients as well. Moreover, the factors which must be strictly adhered to while taking care of a mentally ill patient is encouraging the patients, observing their verbal behavior, and restatement of the patient. In addition to that, as commented byAnonson et al.(2014), another importantcommunication processfor nurses dealing with psychiatric issues is to ask the right questions in order to evaluate the information from the patients. The correct choice of words must also be paid attention to, for addressing the mental behavior of the patients.
Along with that, as stated by Bender, Connelly and Brown (2013), another important factor that nurses should abide by is the maintenance of the safety of the patients. It is a common scenario that psychiatric patients often become hostile and tend to harm others. Therefore, nurses should always make sure that the patients do not have access to any harmful object which might harm them and others as well. In this regard, the role of leadership can be mentioned for nurses. Moreover, the minimum standards for nurses should be backed up by 10 years of degree and experience and therefore, it shall help in the development of the efficiency of the nurses. The knowledge gained by the nurses as a result of the learning process can be applied to treat the psychiatric patients more effectively (Professional standards, 2017).
