It is noted that the leadership in the early childhood education is a long custom; however it varies in the form and the manner of its implementation. The author in the book “Researching Leadership in Early Childhood Education” has stated that the leadership management and the managerial functions have enabled to connect the work of the teachers, academicians and institutions so that the future generations are benefited to a larger extent. (Rodd, 2013). In the book, the author has collated various researchers pertaining to the subject and has stated greater insights on the impact of leadership in ECEC. It is noted that the teachers in modern day context possess various roles like performing the role of trainer and leader in the same circumstances. This is mainly due to the enhanced demand in the educational leadership. (Rodd, 2013). The directors of ECEC has been asked to act as pedagogical leaders, managers, trainers etc as a part of their role, though there is a demand in the role of leadership is growing in the childhood care there is a lack in the training to up skill the directors, teachers who can assume more responsibilities. (Kieff, 2009).Governments, educational institutions ad parents are looking for appropriate leadership in the ECEC practices. Therefore the research which can support the enhancement for leadership in ECEC is growing tremendously in the recent areas. (Owns, 2011)
In the article by Manjula Waniganayake it is noted that there is recognition of the professional preparation for leaders as there is an increasing erudition in the ECEC industry. (Waniganayake, 2013).It is stated in the various research articles that the availability of qualified leaders will contribute significantly to the learning outcomes of the students; also there is a emerging in the delivery of quality in the early childhood education. (Berns, 2010). It is noted that the global trends has reflected a sense of increased professionalization in the early childhood education with many staff possessing university qualifications and are being treated as the educational leaders. (Jackson, 2014). It is further noted that there is an absence of conventional career development which will support the role of leadership in the education sector of the childhood. Furthermore, it is noted that the demand for such roles is getting more attention as the government and universities are looking for enhancing the career development for the employees and researchers in the educational institutions. (Berger, 2012).
It is stated by researchers that the government is now focusing to recognize the overall quality of the childhood are mainly dependent on the quality of workforce and the mentoring which needs to be provided for enhance the qualification level of the staff, participation level of the trainers in learning. It is noted that in Australia, Mentoring is considered as one of the effective strategy for promoting the role of leadership in early childhood learning. It is further noted that mentoring is considered as one of the plausible solution to overcome the challenges which arises in the early childhood education. (Morrison, 2011)
Furthermore it is noted that the short term intrusion is needed which can be acting as a preventive approach for succession planning for safeguarding against the sudden loss of expertise. (Rodd, 2013). The government of Australia is considered as the legislations which will enable in linking the National Quality Framework. It is also noted that the collegial meaning of mentoring is also noted in the manner of language which is used by the teachers. Also, the collaborative mentoring enable in supervisory relationship, which is also noted as an opportunity for various colleagues for engaging in the thoughtful dialogue which will enable in increasing the empowerment and promoting the disposition for a various type of learning. (Jalongo, 2012).
The researchers has stated that there exist various ways in enhancing the quality in the early childhood education, one of the means is to impart pedagogical leadership, mentoring the trainers for enabling a better educational leader, providing good career development and focus more on strategic planning. (Mertler, 2009). The various articles lies on one principle, that there needs a leadership in the early childhood education and there are various ways of doing it. Some of the researchers were focusing in performing the research through the implementation of case study method, like in the research article by Manjula Waniganayake, the author in order to analyse the leadership careers in early childhood has noted that the trainers were able to draw a map of their career development in the education. The average experience level of such trainers were more than 10 years, it was identified that most of the trainers has drawn their career map in an upward movement which enables them perform their job in a timely manner, it is noted that while analyzing the career pathway map which is drawn by the respondents has stated the educators has undergone various challenging nature which has impacted on their current employment. (Rodd, 2013).
In the research article presented by Doranna Wong, it is stated that the mentoring plays a huge role in leadership strategy in the childhood education; the research was conducted for a period spanning 12 years which aims in understanding the evolution of mentoring in building the top down approach for enhanced early childhood educationist is further pointed out that the mentoring in the early childhood education is measured based on three aspects which is classified into three aspects like dispositions, knowledge and responsibilities. It is briefly understood that the research is mainly focused on the conceptual model rather than the empirical research for supporting the research study. The author was of the strong opinion that these constructs of early childhood manager can act as a mentor for enhancing the leadership growth in the childhood education. (Rodd, 2013).
The researcher has tried to link the three dimensions assist the individuals in becoming more than a mentor and will enable them to perform their roles in a more efficient manner. It is further identified that if there is lack of mutual awareness and concrete understanding will make the mentoring process highly ineffective. (Jalongo, 2012). Furthermore, these dimensions will support the individuals in analyzing the purpose of education, frame clear goals and expected outcomes and can revisit the issues in order to reduce disharmony at the workplace. Furthermore, it is mentioned that the various studies has distinguished that the formal mentoring program tends to provide more creative output when compared with informal mentoring, also studies have stated that the collective mentoring program enables in enhancing the experience of the program, provides different perspective on mentoring and responsibility. (Jackson, 2014). However, this research provides lack of evidence, type of research method used etc. This research is more focused only on the qualitative impact of mentoring in the leadership under early childhood education. Most of the studies were focused in providing the benefits of implementation of leadership in the early childhood education in order to support the policies and procedures which are implemented by the government. The researchers have also focused their attention in stating that in order to provide high quality early childhood education their needs more concentration on pedagogical leadership. It is also identified that the role of pedagogy is highly important for the success in offering good and quality early childhood education, it was also mentioned that this will enable in combining the learning and education in an enhanced manner and it is more focused towards child centered learning rather than program based learning. (Rodd, 2013). The researchers have further understood that the partnership between the educators and the parents is one of the crucial aspects in offering high quality learning experience for the students. This affiliation will enable in maintaining and creating unique plans for the children based on their grasping power and this will influence the teachers in designing and creating new programs accordingly. Furthermore, it is important to note that the effective pedagogical intervention will assist in overcoming the learning difficulties of the children and will assist them in creating an optimal foundation for better growth and development among children. (Rodd, 2013).
It is further identified from the various research in the leadership among the early childhood is hindered by various aspects. (Mertler, 2009). The researchers were focusing with a narrow perspective and most of the researcher has analyzed only on the quantitative aspects with less focus on empirical study. It is identified that the concept of leadership in early childhood education has been high importance in the recent times. Many governments and education institutions has stated there is a need for imparting the leadership aspects in the education system, however they are not focusing much on developing the trainers in enhancing their capabilities. (Owns, 2011). Though researchers have stated these aspects but it lacks in concrete evidence through data analysis. It is also eminent that the research was mainly focused on the employees and trainers in the educational institutions, the main need was created from the government policies and the strategy implemented by the educational institutions are often ignored. It is also evident from various academic analyses that the principles and the implementation of leadership aspects in the childhood education system will differ based on the demographic variables, method of education offered by the educational institutions, policies of the government etc. It is also distinguished that the government policies possess the potential to address various issues in the area of leadership involvement in the adult childhood; however such aspects are not addressed in the research. Additionally, there was no major evidence in understanding the advancement of career of the trainers who has imparted leadership in their current roles, also it was prominent that the trainers has not seen any career counselors or seek any guidance for improving their involvement.
It was noted that in Finnish school system, the minimum qualification of teachers in early childhood education required undergraduation, but it was noted that most of the teachers have completed postgraduation. (Rodd, 2013). But in other countries it was not mandatory, the research articles has lack in understanding the impact of qualification of the trainers in enhancing the experience of early childhood education. (Jackson, 2014). Also it was noted that in a research it was difficult to relate the impact of qualification in the long term career planning of the trainers. Though the research scholars have stated that there is a close relationship between the impact of mentoring and leadership outcome in the research, but this is not clearly stated through evidence based approach. Also, in the aspect of mentoring there is no clear statement as who will provide the mentoring to the trainers and how such mentoring programs will be successfully carried out. There is no clear evidence on the standardization of the mentoring policy therefore creating meaningful constructs on the mentoring process cannot be made clearly. Imparting mentoring in the early childhood requires clear investigation and analysis; these aspects were not properly addressed in the research paper.
Based on the national quality standards has provided a detailed structure which encourages the educators of the early childhood to be leaders. This will enable in creating a proactive approach of learning. The leaders must possess adequate knowledge which assist them in regulating and streamlining the education process in a better way.
To conclude, the leaders should have a clear vision, devise a structured path and have self belief in completing the task. The early childhood leaders should possess dynamic capabilities which will enable them to motivate other team members so that the task will be completed efficiently and effectively. It is stated that the other stakeholders like parents, societies should collaboratively work with the leaders for enhancing the quality of education in early childhood.
