This program has been conducted over the topic Ethics Leadership and Decision Making so as to generate an understanding of the role of ethics, leadership and decision making in the business. This program has been executed with a motive to analyse the role of ethics, leadership and decision making and to establish a link between these three concepts. This program will discuss the concept of ethical dilemma which affects the decision making process of the organisation, ethical dilemma faced by an organisation and theoretical concepts from the managerial ethics for the purpose of examining the dilemma critically. An examination and critical evaluation is done over the link or relationship between the concepts of ethics, leadership and decision making which plays an important role in the execution of the operations of the organisation in proper manner and the manner in which leaders can ensure that the decisions of the organisations are within the ethical framework.
All these aspects or elements of this program will be discussed or explained with the help of organisation so as to present these aspects in a better manner. The organisation of Australia which has been selected for this report is “King Living” a furniture manufacturer, retail chain and furniture designer established in 1977 with its headquarter in Sydney, Australia. At present King Living is having 14 showrooms in Australia with international showrooms in New Zealand and Singapore. It is offering commercial as well as residential furniture products to its customers with high quality so as to satisfy the customers and enhance the performance of the organisation. It is using technological advancements for the purpose of improving the quality of the products. The products offered by King Living ranges from contemporary leather and fabric sofas, furniture of wood for the bedrooms, storage, dining and for outdoor.
Ethical dilemma faced by King Living
The term ethics can be explained as the aspect which differentiate or bifurcate the right and wrong in an action or activity. Ethics plays an important role in every organisation as every organisation is having a responsibility towards the society and the environment in which it exists and offers services or products to its customers. Ethics are the moral standard or the principles adopted by an individual for the purpose of conducting an action or activity. Ethical dilemma can be understood as a situation which involves two different options in front of the individual and gives rise to conflict due to the confusion which one to select as both are morally correct. This situation gives rise to right and wrong. Every organisation faces dilemmas at some point of time during the execution of its operations (Woiceshyn, 2011).
With the increase in the industrialisation, the environment is getting affected as the natural resources present in the environment are being used by the industries at large level and this has led to shortage of the natural resources. The raw material for the industries is provided by the environment in the form of natural resources. The excessive use of these resources has resulted into harmful impact over the environment. This dilemma forces the organisation to make choice from the options present in front of it. King Living is offering quality furniture products to its customers, which are made up of wood, plastic, metals, leather and fabrics (Chikweche & Fletcher, 2013). King Living is facing an ethical dilemma which has resulted into confusions in the decision making process of the organisation. It is using wood for the manufacturing of the furniture products and wood from the trees which are the part of natural resources of an environment act as raw material for King Living and with the decrease in the area of forest and number of trees an ethical dilemma has raised. The ethical dilemma faced by King Living is that whether it should use wood for manufacturing furniture so as to reduce the cost as well as efforts or use other metals for the manufacturing of the products for safeguarding the natural resources. The furniture manufactured of wood is less expensive and involve less efforts and is the most common used raw material for manufacturing the products and the furniture of wood is demanded by many customers and on the other hand due to the increase in the use of wood the natural resources are getting extinct (Gallagher, 2015).
Theoretical concepts from managerial ethics for examining the ethical dilemma
Managerial ethics can be explained as the set of standards for the manager which guides the manner a manager operates the operations at the workplace of the organisation. There are various theories of managerial ethics which helps in the decision making process of the organisation. Theoretical concepts from managerial ethics are used for the purpose of evaluation of the ethical dilemma. These theories help the organisation to make decisions of the business by analysing the impacts of these decisions over the stakeholders and ensuring the attainment of the objectives of the organisation. Different individuals have different ways for the purpose of decision making and organisations need to consider the ethical theories for the purpose of decision making. For the purpose of analysing or examining the ethical dilemma few theories from managerial ethics can be used as these ethical theories are egoism, Utilitarianism and care ethics (Woiceshyn, 2011). These theories of ethics are discussed below:
Egoism: in this theory of ethics the focus is over the impact of ones actions or activities over oneself. The morale of the individual is explained with the help of the impacts of the actions of an individual over itself. The concern of this theory of ethics is over the self-interest rather than over the others interest. This theory of ethics promotes self-interest over the interest of others so as to attain the goals set by an entity. An entity can be understood as an individual or an organisation which is operating its activities for the purpose of achieving its objectives. This theory explains that an entity must select the alternative or take the decisions in the interest of one for achieving its objectives. This theory of ethics claims that an entity should not give up for others. According to this theory of ethics King Living need to consider self-interest over the interest of the others which can affect others such as to the society and to the environment in which the business is operating. Use of wood for the manufacturing of the furniture results in reduction in the cost to the company, more durable than the furniture of other metals, saves time, is easily available and is in demand by some customers. This theory guides King Living towards selection of the option or taking the decision which helps in the attainment of the objectives decided by King Living (Fryer, 2016).
Utilitarianism: this theory of the ethics is dependent or based on the ability of an individual to make predictions for the consequences of the actions. This theory is focused over the selection of the alternative or choice which ensures that minimal harm is done to the various parties involved in the actions or in the activities. This theory aims at attainment of the greatest happiness principle. The selection is based on the generation of the benefits for the different stakeholders involved in the actions. In this theory of ethics analysis is done of the different outcomes of the actions for the purpose of selection of the action which results in maximum benefit for the different stakeholders. Less preference is given to the self-interest in this theory. Different aspects are considered under this theory before the selection or the decision. King Living is considering the benefit of the society and the environment as reducing the usage of the wood for the manufacturing of the furniture will help in the promotion of an ethical concept as well as providing benefit to the society. This decision will help King Living in reducing the harm it is creating to the environment by utilisation of the wood which harms the natural resources as well as lives of the people at large. It also needs to consider the impact of the decision over the different stakeholders and the decision need to be taken on the basis of the maximum benefit produced by the decision (Vartiainen & Siponen, 2010).
Care ethics: the focus of this theory of ethics is over the relationships, empathy and vulnerability. The basic principle of this ethical theory is that action or the decision need to be taken when the action or the decision is resulting in caring towards those who actually needs the support and in vulnerable condition. An entity must select the actions or decide so as to ensure that the care and support is provided to those groups are vulnerable and need the support of others for the improvement. This theory of ethics helps in providing support, maintains and improves the relationships with the others, provides care and concern for the others and reflection of sympathy towards those who are in a vulnerable condition. This ethical theory shifts the focus of King Living from self-interest to the safety and wellbeing of the people are it and of the environment in which it exists so as to survive and grow. King Living is involved in the manufacturing of the furniture and for this it is making use of wood as a raw material and for the benefit of the society and the environment it has shifted the manufacturing of the furniture by using wood to furniture by using metals (Fryer, 2016).
Examination and evaluation of the relationship between the ethics, leadership and decision making
All the three concepts are an important part of an organisation as these helps in the execution of the operations of the business. These aspects help the business in achieving the goals of the organisation by utilising the concepts in a proper manner. All the three aspects are linked with each other and help in the execution of the operations of the business in a better manner. Ethics guides the business and leaders need to be ethical for the purpose of decision making so as to enhance the performance of the business (Baines, et. al., 2012).
Ethics can be understood as rules or standards or set of principles which helps an individual to identify the right and wrong. Ethics plays a vital role in every organisation as it provides support to the organisation and help in bifurcating the right and wrong for the purpose of drawing conclusion or decisions. The decisions taken for an organisation affects the various stakeholders involved in the organisation and has interest in the operations of the business. The decisions of an organisation affect the different stakeholder involved in it (Garza Mitchell, 2012). Business ethics does not depend over the size of the organisation or the level at which the organisation is offering services to the customers. Ethics help in enhancing the decision making process of the organisation and enhances the morale of the organisation. Ethics provides variety of benefits to the business and these benefits include creation of creditability, providing satisfaction to the basic needs of the humans, improvement in the decision making process of the organisation, provides long term gain to the business, provides security to the society and unit people and leadership. Business ethics promotes healthy relationships between the different stakeholders (Litschka, et. al., 2011). It acts as a guide for the management and provides a direction to the operations of the organisation. Ethics of the business not only guides to the business but also provides a guide to the employees and their efforts in the right direction. It enhances the performance of the business as well as image of the organisation. King Living has adopted ethics for the purpose of management of the resources of the organisation in an effective manner and better decision making. It is crucial for the business to perform within the ethical framework so as to operate in a right manner. King Living can analyse the business problems in a better manner with the help of the ethics (Remisová, et. al., 2014).
Leadership is an important aspect for every business and it ensures the efforts of all the factors of business together and in a common direction with a common motive. Leadership help in communication with the different stakeholders of the organisation in a better manner. The focus of leadership is over the speed of the functions of the business and flexibility of the business. Successful leadership helps in the recognition of the objectives of the organisation. Leadership helps in the utilisation of the resources in such a manner that this results in Execution of the operations of the business by combining the efforts of the different individuals and moving the efforts in a common direction (Brauer, 2013). Every organisation needs guidance and support by experienced individuals so as to enhance the performance of the individual and the growth of the business. Leadership helps in the delegation of the activities or tasks of the organisation with a motive to perform the operations in a better manner. King Living is utilising leadership for the purpose of development of the individuals for the achievement of the goals of the company. It plays an important role in the development of the performance of individuals. Leadership helps in understanding the environment of the workplace of the business as well as environment in which business operates. It builds the capabilities of the organisation. A leader faces several problems which affects the performance of the leader as well as effectiveness of the business. A leader ensures the change in the organisation as per the requirement so as to match with the requirement. King Living has implemented leadership in its operation so as to manage the efforts of the organisation in the right direction (Newman, et. al., 2014).
Decision making can be understood as the process of selection of the alternative as a decision for the purpose of execution of the operations of the business. Various problems may arise in front of the business which need to managed and dealt in an effective manner and a decision need to be taken with a motive to enhance the performance. Decision making is an important function of an organisation which provides flexibility to the operations of the business. Various aspects of the business environment can create huge impact over the decision making process of the business. The factors which affects the decision making process are lack of information, lack of ethics, lack of knowledge and lack of decision making ability (Steinbauer, et. al., 2014;2013).
All the three aspects are related or linked with each other. Ethics, leadership and decision making are integral part of a business on which the success of the organisation depends. Personal values of the individual are termed as ethics of the individuals which are the rules and principles followed by the individual. These principles guide the efforts of an individual. Ethics shapes the framework in which the leader performs its responsibilities. A leader should adopt principles or values so as to make decisions on fair basis and to ensure the attainment of the objectives of the organisation. King Living is operating its operation by adopting ethical values so as to set standards for the purpose of ensuring that the practices of the organisation are not affecting the different stakeholders of the business in an adverse manner (Hoyt & Price, 2015). Ethical values or the principles form a base for the leaders so as to take decisions on the basis of these principles. Decisions regarding the business create impact over the different stakeholders so King Living needs to adopt the ethics so as to ensure that no harm is done to the stakeholders or to the society or to the environment from the execution of operations of the business. The dilemma faced by the King Living is the manufacturing of the furniture using wood is creating adverse impact over the society and over the environment as the natural resources are getting affected. King Living needs to analyse these concepts with the help of the ethical values or principles and making decisions which helps in reducing the adverse impact over the various stakeholders (Nunn & Avella, 2015). Theories of ethics helps in the decision making process of King Living with the help of the application of the leadership skills so as to ensure that the effectiveness is maintained and the responsibility of the organisation towards the society and environment is fulfilled. This decision will help King Living is setting an example in the business environment which will help in promoting different organisations for implementing the ethical values in the culture of the organisation so as to guide the actions of the organisation in the right direction. Ethics, leadership and decision making are the important concepts of an organisation which helps in the enhancement in the performance of the organisation (Lehnert, et. al., 2016).
This program has covered different concepts including ethics, leadership and decision making and their importance in an organisation. King Living is offering furniture products to its customers and an ethical dilemma has been discussed which is faced by King Living which has resulted into change in the decisions of the business. It has discussed two theoretical concepts from the managerial ethics for critically analysing the ethical dilemma so as to facilitate decision making. A relationship between the ethics, leadership and decision making has been established which has explained the manner in which these three concepts are related with each other and support each other in an organisation. The concept of leadership can be used for the purpose of ensuring that the decisions of the organisation are taken in ethical manner. King Living can use leadership for the purpose of taking decisions within the ethical framework. Leaders use ethics so as to consider the various aspects and to take decisions which provides benefit to the organisation. Ethics guides the leaders towards the right path and helps in the leader to analyse the available options in a better manner and take the decisions which provides benefit to the society as well as to the organisation. Ethics frames set of standards for the leader which it need to follow for the decision making process of the organisation.
