Task 2

2(A)

The critical path jobs must be monitored carefully; the critical path analysis is the method that shows the activities which are essential for completing a task. It also helps in identifying the required time to finish an activity and the connections between the activities. The critical path method would help in predicting the finishing time of the project.

The method is the long sequence of activities for a project which is needed to be finished before the due date. Unless the predecessor activity gets finished, the new activity cannot be started in the critical path. If the activity takes long time to finish then it would be wastage of lots of time because new activity cannot be started. So time management is very important in the critical path method (Cleland and Ireland, 2006).

In managing a particular project, critical path is very important and useful. On the identification of the critical path, analysis can be made that in which part the efforts are more needed. If there is any change in the critical path activity, then whole process would be affected.

2(B)

There is a need to add resource management in one activity when you want to crash a project in the critical path. The main focus in the critical path process is the decrease the duration of time to finish an activity; here duration means the original time taken to complete the project and not the working hours (Cleland and Ireland, 2006).   When the project crashes, the working hours would increase because the new resources would take time to speed up.

There is a need to identify the activity you want to crash; the main focus should be finishing one activity at a time.

Look for:

A common activity that does not need higher specializations
A big activity that could support more resources
A task that would be finished modularly

Once the task is selected, find out which resources are best fitted and allocate them. Through proper communication confirm that your team is well aware of the changes and reasons for the change (Kerzner, 2013). The person whose activity is being crashed, their heads needed to be up and also they should prepare assignment for the new comers. There is need to produce a new duration number for the critical path chart.

2(c)

The project manager costs $1000 a day (8 working hours). Thus the cost of 1 working hour would be $125. In case a manager is working on many parallel projects, then the number of hours allotted to television station management project management would be reduced and the cost of project manager would reduce. However this would have long term implication as the project manager will not be able to manage the project activities well. This could result in an increased schedule which could further delay the projects.

In case the project is delayed, the operational cost incurred in the project would increase due to which the overall bid price of the project would increase.

3(A)

For completing the work faster, the activities on the critical path needs to be finished faster. The four activities on critical path (along with the resources) are presented below:

Pour Roof Slab

3 Laborer, 2 Carpenter, 1 foreman, 1 project manager

Complete Interior Framing and Utilities

3 Laborer, 2 Carpenter, 1 foreman, 1 electricians, 1 project manager

Paint Building Interior, Install Fixtures, & Clean up

2 Laborers, 2 Carpenters, 1 Electrician, 1 foreman, 1 project manager

Obtain Job Acceptance

2 Laborers, 2 Carpenters, 1 Electrician, 1 foreman, 1 project manager

From the above, it is clear that laborers and carpenter are assigned to all activity.  Resource pools for Laborer is 8 and carpenter is 3 also there are 4 electricians in pool. These can be used for completing the work faster.

3(b)

There are various strategies available that can be used to reduce the scheduling conflict, these are:

Stagger the workload: There is a need to contact the volume peak times as at that time the office is full of staff, arrival patterns change because of the organizations priority with billing event, promotions or launching a new product offering. The employees whose job starts on the hour would try to stagger those times by adding half hour and a quarter hour start times to employee shift assignment.

Hiring part time staff: If possible and required, try to hire part time employees who can help in completing the job. Getting work from part time staff is very easy; they are new to the organization and are flexible to the timing the organization, they can work in the shifts also.

Be flexible: The employees should be flexible to work in any shift that may be split shifts, part time shifts or more. The flexible timings of the organization would help in the retention of more employees in the organization. The employees would come according to their flexibility of time and do their best to finish the job.

Look beyond: If the workload is seriously more then go for offering over time to the employees, which is an easy option. Mostly the employees would not work more voluntarily, but if they are paid for their overtime, they will work more. Especially in the season of festivals like Christmas and New Year, people need more money so they do over time also.
