My role in the recruitment and induction processes in my organisation is as follows:

1. To ensure the selection of candidates is fair and unbiased.

3. To welcome the new member appropriately and familiarise them with the equipment, resources and facilities of the organisation.

4. To explain the emergency and evacuation processes thoroughly.

5. To familiarise the new recruit with all the policies and procedures of the organisation, including the health and safety measures, dispute and complaint resolution, etc.

To provide the families and staff members with additional support, our organisation can provide with different referrals depending on the situation or requirements. For example, if any family or staffs have any financial problem and need assistance with funding, they can be referred with the appropriate authority or NGOs that can provide them with the funding. For other related assistance such as families from culturally different background that may require Educators with special skills, are provided with referrals of various other centres that have such trained Educators.

Self-reflection is very much essential to update one’s skills and knowledge in the respective field. It gives one the opportunity to know their strengths and weaknesses. To reflect on my own work practices to update my skills and knowledge, I sit individually with my Educators and staff and ask them if in any instance my behaviour was negative. Based on their feedbacks I analyse myself and come up with the improvement plans. Self-criticism is also an essential part of self-reflection.

When taking any decision, I don’t let my personal association cloud my judgement. I make sure to take rational decisions without any influence of personal connections.

1.16 Describe three (3) facilitation processes that you use for leading team meetings and discussion and why these are effective in leading the team.

For leading the team meetings, the following facilitation processes are used

A. Ensure to start the meeting on time:If the leader doesn’t start the meeting on time, it reflects negatively on the leadership skills. The team members might take advantage of that at later stage and make delays with the meeting stating the fault on the leader.

B. The leader should make sure to welcome everyone nicely. If the leader does not have a pleasant personality, the team members feel low about themselves as well, which in turn affects the team as a whole.

1.25 Identify the performance management policy and procedure that is followed in your organisation when reviewing an individual’s performance. This should include such aspects as:

a. Implementing and documenting performance management processes

b. Working collaboratively with the individual to agree on performance improvement and development plans

c. Providing feedbacks on an on-going basis

d. Identifying poor performance and taking necessary actions

e. Monitoring and coaching individuals to improve performance

f. Identifying and providing additional support or referral when required

The performance management policy and procedure of reviewing an individual’s performance followed by the organisation include all the proper aspects such as implementing and documenting of performance management processes and other related aspects. The policy focuses on providing appropriate feedbacks on a regular basis to all its employees to ensure that the poor performance by the individual is identified and necessary actions are taken against it. For such individuals, proper coaching is provided to help them improve their performances and they are monitored from time to time.

The two significant events from my family history that influenced my current values, beliefs and attitudes would include the old fashioned attitude that they have towards every culture and the pride they hold for the family. My family holds a very high value towards life and love to try different delicacies. They believe “we live to eat, not the other way around”. They also have too much proud for themselves as well as for the children of the family. They believed that their children are better in academics than other kids of the school.

2.3 List three external factors that may have influenced your cultural identity.

The external factors that have influenced my cultural identity cannot be limited to just three. But to suffice, the three factors would include the fact that we had to move around to different places as a part of my father’s job. So I got to interact with people from different cultures and was able to learn more about their cultures. This made me believe in all the various cultural beliefs that people hold. The other factor would be how people from different ethnic group treat others differently. Some of them show positive attitude towards others whereas some are nonchalant. Lastly would be the cultural beliefs they held towards food that changed my views towards them.

2.4 Reflect on the potential impact your own background may have on interactions and relationships with people from other cultures.

The fact that I had to travel to different places because of my father’s job, it gave me the chance to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. I got to know and learn the cultural beliefs that they hold for themselves and towards others. It made me realise that different cultures hold different beliefs and people belonging to the same culture need not follow the same idea.

2.5 Identify at least three areas of knowledge, attitudes, attribute or skills that you need to develop your cultural competence.

The three areas of knowledge, attitude, attribute or skills that I need to develop for my cultural competence would include gaining knowledge about the diverse cultural beliefs and practices, developing skills for communicating and interacting across cultures and developing positive attitude for the cultural variances. I need to be fair and unbiased towards every cultural group and treat them all similarly. Having a positive attitude towards the entire cultural group would also give them the confidence to leave their children at our community centre.

2.6 Give two examples of times when you have had to demonstrate tolerance and understanding of another culture or someone else’s personal beliefs.

There has been an instance when parents of a child attending our centre were from a different cultural background wanted us to treat their child with special care and treatment than other people. I had to make the parents understand that every child is same in our eyes and everyone is special. They are all treated equally and no other special attention is given to children with separate cultural background. They understood it all and were satisfied with the explanation. The other instance would include when an African child tried to keep himself isolated thinking he is not welcomed among all. We all made efforts to welcome him warmly and made him realise that he is equally special just like every other child.

2.7 Give an example of a situation you were in which made you feel upset or angry.

There was an incident with my father where due to his old fashioned, conservative idea had asked me not to be friends with certain individuals as they were from a different cultural and ethnical background. That has really upset me and I had gotten into a fight with my father because of this as those individuals were really good friends of mine. According to my father they would have been bad influence on me and would have affected my studies.

a. What caused you to fell upset or angry?

This old fashioned and conservative attitude of my father towards the other cultural and ethnic group of people was very upsetting for me. He had too much of pride on me that he did not consider those individuals to be suitable enough to befriend me. This negative attitude of his towards the other group of individuals was wrong and would have left a deep impact on me had I not been accustomed to different cultural belief from the early age.

b. What impact did your feelings have on other people around you?

I had felt upset and angry at the same time when my father had asked me not be friend with those individuals. As I have been very close to those individuals and they had become my best friends, so breaking up the friendship would have been wrong for both them as well as me. Although I tried to avoid interacting with them for some duration of time, it upset them as well. They felt bad as it was a form of racial discrimination and they too felt isolated. As I was angry with my father, I was not interacting with him either which hurt him as well.

c. How did you handle the situation?

To handle the situation, I showed anger and upset towards my father because of his attitude towards those individuals from culturally and ethnically different background. Because of this behaviour of mine, he was upset with me for quite some time but decided to give into my demands. He strictly asked me to limit my interactions with those individuals as completely ending it was not possible. Later my father had to shift to a different place so I left those individuals behind and was never able to get in touch with them again.

d. How do you think you could have handled the situation differently?

Instead of being angry and upset with my father, I should have talked to him logically. I should have made him understand that even though they might belong to an entirely different cultural and ethnic background, they have an open minded personality. They belonged to good family background and my association with them would not have affected my academics in any way.

To embrace and respond to the diversity in an early childhood setting, the following activities and/or resources can be made to use:

1. Using creative techniques can be used to encourage the children to reflect on their own behaviour.

2. In cases where there can be a possible occurrence of bias-related incident among the children, responsible intervention is very essential to avoid the situation from getting out of control.

3. The children can also be equipped with necessary techniques that will allow them to respond suitably in situations where they either witness or experience such biased behaviour.

To address to this kind of stereotype, Cindy must be given a proper counselling on the fact that aged people have more experience that they gained throughout their lifetime. Beth has more idea regarding the management of children and other related works that constitute the child care services.

Jason is the Kindergarten teacher at the service and is currently implementing a language and literacy program, focussing on letters of the alphabet. There are a number of children who attend have English as a second language (ESL). Cathy another Educator thinks that Jason is wasting his time teaching ESL children alphabet.

Cathy here showed a negative attitude towards the children who have English as a second language (ESL). She believes that Jason teaching alphabets to these children is a waste of time because her judgment towards them is biased.

Cathy has to understand that every child has the right to learn new things and they learn it best when the concept is introduced at an early age. She needs to understand that even though the children have English as second language, if they are made familiar with the concept from the primary stage, they will be able to grasp the concept even better when they grow up.  

Beatrice works in a high profile job and her child attends full time care. She quite often makes comments that Educators are just babysitters and play in the sand pit all day.

Beatrice has shown a typical myth related behaviour towards the job structure of the care centre Educators. Educators are not merely babysitters who play in the sand pits all day. They take care of the children and educate them with all the essential knowledge and skills that will help them in the later stages of life.

Beatrice must be given a proper introduction and idea regarding the job that an Educator performs. She must be given an educational tour of the child care centre in her free time so that she can get an insight as to what functions they perform at the child care centres.

4.7 Identify two positive changes which have occurred in Australian culture over the last 30 years which addresses the needs of children with disability. Explain how these changes have affected the way in which services are provided to promote inclusion.

Many positive changes have occurred in Australian culture over the last 30 years which addresses the needs of children with disability. The government has introduced the policy of The National Disability Strategy that focuses on providing the children with disability with human rights, social and economic imperative. They need support in all aspects of living like socially, economically. The government also tries to provide the families and the people supporting the person with disability, with funds to help them financially.

5.1 List three cultural misunderstandings or cultural conflicts that have occurred, or may occur, in your service.

The three cultural misunderstandings or cultural conflicts that have occurred or may occur in my service are children from different cultural background unable to adjust with the rest of the children; some children showing negative and abusive attitude towards children with different cultural background; and some staffs and Educators being biased towards the children from the different cultural background and not treating them properly.

5.2 Choose one of the misunderstandings that you have mentioned above and describe how it may be resolved by answering the following questions:

a. Describe the conflict in detail.

There was a child from Aboriginal background Akama. He had certain behavioural issues towards the other children of the centre. We had tried to provide him a behavioural counsellor to help him improve his behaviour. But one day he got into a conflict with another Australian child David and the argument later turned into physical violence. All the Educators and staffs in the immediate surrounding rushed to stop and separate them. During the conflict, David had used certain wrong terms for Akama that hurt his cultural beliefs which resulted in Akama getting physically violent.

b. What may happen if you do not resolve this conflict?

If the conflict wasn’t resolved immediately, both the children would have ended up injuring each other badly. The children had already started to abuse each other verbally, hurting the other’s individual cultural beliefs. This incident has also left a deep impact on the other children who were a part of the group David and Akama were in. Those children, witnessing something so violent, would take time to heal. It has left a very deep negative impact on those children which would need a little counselling to get over with.

c. Who will you discuss the misunderstanding with?

This misunderstanding needs to be discussed with the parents of both David and Akama. Since it is the parents whom the children generally tend to follow in respect of cultural attitude towards other. They need to talk to their respective children very kindly and make them understand that behaviour and attitude towards the other child was very wrong, morally as well as psychologically and emotionally.  They should be taught the importance of each cultural background and the beliefs that they hold.

d. Identify two possible solutions taking into consideration social and cultural diversity.

The two possible solutions taking into considering social and cultural diversity would be:

A. Introduction of a course that explains about the importance of different cultural backgrounds and their beliefs. It is necessary to introduce such ideas and beliefs from the very early age of childhood development and would avoid any such future conflicts in their life.

B. The other possible solution would be providing training to all the Educators regarding the importance and beliefs of the different cultural background. The training would also help them to learn the different languages so that they can overcome the communication barrier.

6.1 Identify the needs of Rhonda and her children.

Rhonda and her children need Educators with proper knowledge regarding the culture and language of the aboriginals. They also need some serious counselling from a good psychologist who deals with issues such as depression and associated behaviour. As Rhonda and her children are still coping with the loss of their father, this is affecting their behaviour towards the other people surrounding them. They need to be provided with options of other care centres where the Educators have well-knowledge regarding the aboriginal cultures so that they can help with the behavioural issues of Miccka, Rhonda’s oldest son.

6.2 How does Brooke display cultural sensitivity when communicating with Rhonda?

Brooke has displayed the appropriate cultural sensitivity that aboriginals show when communicating with each other. When communicating with Rhonda, she made sure that she avoided any sort of eye contact, which is a sign of showing respect and sympathy. She also kept her tone and approach sympathetic so that Rhonda shouldn’t feel disrespected in any way. Brook’s approach when conversing with Rhonda displayed her understanding towards the needs of Rhonda and her children.

6.3 How does Brooke display best care in practice when supporting Rhonda and her children?

When supporting Rhonda and her children, Brooke has displayed the best care in practice. She ensured to document the issue and provide extra support for the children and mother. She had provided them with interpreter service so that they can communicate easily and are able to express themselves better. She has also worked with the lead educator of the centre in assisting Rhonda’s children and to set up a behaviour guidance plan for Miccka, the oldest son of Rhonda. She has also provided Rhonda with a list of other Aboriginal support care services that she can consider and access. She has also arranged for Aboriginal cultural trainings for all the Educators of the centre, so that they can interact better with Rhonda and her children, and this skill shall be helpful in any such future cases.

6.4 How can the negative attitudes and comments made by the Educators impact on Rhonda and her children?

The negative comments made by some of the Educators towards the behaviour of Rhonda and her children, affects them damagingly. They are already coping with the loss of their father and Rhonda is finding it difficult to take care of her children on her own without any male support. It is natural for them to behave negatively as they are depressed. But the Educators making such negative comments as she doesn’t care for her children or that the absence of male role model is the result of bad behaviour by Miccka due to his aboriginal background gives a negative impact on them and they feel that this is how they are supposed to behave.

6.5 How can the centre support:

Rhonda’s cultural and emotional needs

The centre can support Rhonda’s cultural and emotional needs by providing her a psychological counsellor who can help her get over her depressions. The centre can also provide them with optional Educators who can communicate with them in their language that will ease in expressing her properly. She may also be provided with some financial support or concessions as all her three children are enrolled to the care centre. She can also be provided with some occupational options that she can perform and would help her cope with her financial issues.

The children’s cultural and emotional needs

The centre can support the children’s cultural and emotional needs by providing the children with an Educator who is well-versed with the cultures of aboriginal people. The centre can also try to provide the children with an aboriginal Educator as this would make them more comfortable as it would give them a sense of familiarity. The centre can also provide the children with personnel who can provide proper guidance regarding the behaviour that is expected of them towards the other people that surround them.
