Introduction

This Capstone Project focuses on the evolution of the business model used by the North American online ecommerce major Amazon.com.  The assignment requires the study of advanced research and understanding the various issues which eventually led Amazon.com to evolute its current business model (Chesbrough, 2007). The objective at this stage of the project is to identify the framework to complete the project.

In this plan, the preliminary studies and the advanced studies which will establish the framework of study and the objectives. In the next phase, which is the second stage Progress Report the sources for primary data and secondary data are identified.Discovering Ecommerce Industry – gaining a bird’s eye view

The project will commence with a study of the online commerce industry.  Literature review of the existing top-performing companies in this sector is studied for gaining knowledge of the nuances of online commerce. After understanding the aspects of digital commerce and looking at many of the models – from the times of eBay to the current Shopify ecosystems and other online service providers, a rough understanding of the world of virtual commerce is gained.The contrasts and similarities between other platforms and Amazon.com are identified.
Identify the key elements of Ecommerce

What are the key elements which compose ecommerce or online retailing?

 The focus will be on learning about -

  • Product browsing systems on a website
  • The selection process (understanding how customization and personalization ensures the options displayed by an online webseller are intuitive to the customers’ previous product selections) ((Johnson, Christensen & Kagermann, 2008)
  • The reviewing of selected products
  •  check-out ( secure features of the payment system, is it third party payment process or is on-page; is the website SSL secured that is encrypted services or otherwise, what is theprivacy policy practiced on the website, the return policy, the exchange of product policy, shipping features and similar features, including pricing)(Hamel & Prahalad, 1994).

The contrasts and similarities between other platforms and Amazon.com are identified.

Understanding Technical Aspects of the platforms

Understanding research literature by the likes of Osterwalder (2007) to  gain knowledge about the various Business model Generation and the Business Model Canvas contexts.The contrasts and similarities between other platforms and Amazon.com are identified.
Business Practice – of Coopetition

Literature review of the business practices and identified different business models. The focus is on the use of coopetition, that is the collaboration of independent business development individually and as part of the larger group. The success of coopetition strategies and the activities were analysed. The advantages which became the fulcrum for Amazon.com’ s success were identified. The method of coopetitive was compared with the collaborative platforms at Sony and Samsung and Taiwanese company to achieve performance optimization. The insight gained coopetition is a strategic advantage for firms and will help in achieving success, performance.

Methodology and Data Collection

Understanding research project  by the likes of Osterwalder (2007) to gain insight into the different business model types is important. Therefore, the primary source of research was on longitudinal case study. This method was adopted to get a holistic evaluation and understand the study as a business related issue. The case study in this assignment is Amazon.com (Ying, 2013). The phenomenon is analysed and understood in real-time. Thus the case study approach helps to gain complete insight into the coopetition theory. To achieve this, a wide-range of secondary data was reviewed (Rusko, 2011). The data was collected by the researchers during the period of 2009 and 2013. The main data
Conclusion

The assorted methods of research, extensive reading of peer –reviewed articles on the subject of business model evolution in the context of online commerce is gained, by the end of this report. The peer-reviewed articles to be used for literature review are short-listed and shared among the group members for discussions and further evaluation in the other stages of this Capstone Project.
