Introduction

This report is relating to describing the importance of innovation in a business. This report is covering the major aspects that are related to the implementation of innovation systems in business. This report is focusing on the process that is to be followed by the organizations of effective implementation of innovation systems. This report is describing the importance of innovation in the growth and development of business. This report has been divided into three tasks where each task is covering its own aspect that is related to innovation in business.

Introduction

This report is relating to innovation as a management tool. This report is describing the policies and procedures that are related to the application of innovation system within businesses.

A great innovator

Innovation can be called as an essential management function as a business cannot be operated in the same plans and procedures for the whole lifetime. It is essential for them to bring changes in their operations and such change is called innovation. Innovation can be of various types such as planned, proactive and reactive innovation. In this case, planned innovation is a result of careful planning and examination of facts. Planned and proactive innovation can be called as same things as it results in innovation through the intervention of business. On the other hand, reactive innovation is such from an innovation as a result of external environment changes. Innovation in any business can be in its products, marketing techniques, the process of the business of any such thing which reflects the growth and success of the organization (Freiling, 2015).

Innovation leads to growth and success of the organization. For example, if any organization such as Marks & Spenser with a view to bringing innovation in its business introduces a varied range of women clothing. According to Martin (2015), through this Marks & Spenser will be able to attract new customers as it is a new innovation by the company. This will also result in building the brand image of the company. Through attracting new customers Marks & Spenser will be able to generate greater revenues for its business. Hence an organization is benefitted with innovation in several ways. Along with the benefits, there are certain challenges that are faced by the organizations through brining innovation in the business such as time, cost, technology, resistant to change, lack of resources, inappropriate market research etc. Innovation is the result of the generation of ideas of the people who are involved with the organization. Innovation is developed with the reference to evaluation of ideas by the people who are involved with the decision making of such organization.

Innovation system

A managed innovation process includes generation of ideas where ideas are generated from various people who are involved in running the operations of the organization. After such generations, ideas are evaluated from each aspect for this evaluation criteria is set. After such evaluation process for implementation of such evaluation is implemented such ideas as a part of innovation. In the words of Martin (2015), strategic alignment for innovation includes product innovation, process innovations, organizational innovations and marketing innovations. Strategic alignment is essential in ensuring the engagement of stakeholders, customers and employees in an organization.

Innovation system also includes industry foresight which helps in understanding the industry. For example industry foresight of Marks & Spenser will include identification of current trends at Marks & Spenser, opportunities and threats at Marks & Spenser. This also includes customer insight which includes identification of requirements of the customers. For example, Marks & Spenser will identify the requirements of its customers before bringing any such innovation in the market. Core competencies and technologies of an organization involve delivering customer benefits, achieving competitive advantage for an organization (Alsolami, et. al., 2016). After all, this innovation system includes the readiness of all the people who are involved with the organization. For example innovation system in Marks & Spenser involves the consent of all the departments in Marks & Spenser as this will innovation will impact people, structure, culture and organizational practices of Marks & Spenser. There are seven strategic dimensions of innovation system which is known as a disciplined innovation which includes well implemented policies and procedures, project management system, six sigma tools, performance management system, change management strategies and continuous improvement process (Freiling, 2015).

Ways through which organizational and team dynamics can effect workplace innovation systems

Approaches to management and leadership are helpful in supporting innovation in the organization as it helps in providing a crystal clear plan for managing innovation. These approaches are helpful in providing a clear vision of the organization. These are helpful in supporting an effective structure for innovation management (Kanagal, 2015). As per leadership approaches, leader plays a major role in communicating the innovative vision of the organization. The leader helps in enabling the proper level of support for innovation systems in the organization.

There are certain challenges and barriers to innovation that are faced by organizations such as time, cost, technology, and resistance to change. In this concern, organizations must focus on the effective evaluation of innovation ideas so that the best innovation idea could be implemented within the organization. Leaders in the organization must encourage the culture of readiness for innovation in the organization (Alsolami, et. al., 2016).

Innovation principles

There are certain principles of innovation which are as follows.

Design with the user:This principle is chosen because this principle says that innovation should be designed in the way that it must be fulfilling the requirements of the users. Through bringing the innovation as per the needs of customers business is able to increase their revenues.

Design for the scale: This principle is chosen because as per this principle innovation process in a business should be developed as per the scale of operations of business. This will help business in developing appropriate innovation processes for them (Kanagal, 2015).

Build for sustainability:This principle is chosen because as per this principle innovation must be supporting the sustainability of the organization. This will help in increasing the sustainability of the business.

Be collaborative: This principle is chosen because this principle says that innovation must be collaborative so that it is helpful in achieving the innovation goals.

Open innovation:This principle is chosen because this principle says that innovation must be able to adopt and expand open standards. This will help businesses in adopting flexible process and policies for innovation (Forsman and Temel, 2011).

Process for idea generation and evaluation

Two processes for idea generation and evaluation are as follows.

1. There should be effective and efficient communication between all departments of an organization.

2. For effective evaluation of ideas, it must be checked that such ideas are able to achieve the overall goals and objectives of the organization (Alsolami, et. al., 2016).

Conclusion

Task 2 Innovation system pilot project

Outcomes of review of current business

Current business of ANU Sport has been reviewed to identify its business as per the seven dimensions of strategic innovation. Results of this review are as follows.

A managed innovation process: There is a managed innovation process in ANU Sport. Through its activities, it can be reviewed that ANU Sport is engaged in bringing innovations in its products and services on regular basis.

Strategic alignment: ANU Sport is building support for the people of society. It is involved with sharing its mission and vision with its stakeholders (Forsman and Temel, 2011).

Industry foresight:ANU Sport is engaged with following the current trends that are prevailing in the market.

Customer foresight: Customers of ANU Sport are satisfied with the products and services of ANU Sport.

Core technologies and competencies:Internal technologies and organizational competencies of ANU Sport are so strong that it is able to achieve competitive advantage in the market.

Organizational readiness:People who are involved with ANU Sport are able to successfully implement such innovation in their business processes.

Disciplined implementation: In the words of Kerr and Nanda (2014), there is well implemented policies and procedures in ANU Sport.Project management and performance management system of ANU Sport is so strong that it is able to implement innovations in its business on regular basis.

Modified innovation system

Modified innovation system of ANU Sport includes innovations in the existing products to make them more attractive and to bring new sports equipment range. In the opinion of Kerr and Nanda (2014), it is required for ANU Sport to innovate as its business as innovation is an effective management tool and the introduction of innovation in the business of ANU Sport will result in increasing the revenues and brand image of the company. In this concern, marketing manager of ANU Sport will research about the current marketing trends in regard to sports equipment which are prevailing in the market. After the research of marketing department, production department of ANU Sport will indulge in production new sports equipment and design department of and the designing department will indulge in redesigning the existing products of ANU Sport (Mikhalkina and Cabantous, 2015).

Implementation plan

Innovation system pilot includes the study that is relating to the implementation of the innovation system in ANU Sport. Implementing the innovation is not an easy task as it cannot be done without prior research (Mikhalkina and Cabantous, 2015). Hence for implementing innovation in ANU Sport, a prior research will be conducted. This research will be helpful in checking the feasibility of the innovation. This will help in determining the benefits of innovation in the business of ANU Sport. Innovation system pilot will include a market research where the research is to be conducted to identify the current marketing trends in relation to products and services of other sports club. After this research, cost and time limit will be decided for implementing this innovation in ANU Sport. Further production department and designing department of ANU Sport will be handed over the task of production and designing of the products and services of ANU Sport (Forsman and Temel, 2011).

Communication plan

For implementing innovation system in ANU Sport it is required to obtain the consent of the stakeholders of ANU Sport. For this ANU Sport will conduct a meeting for its stakeholders where in the meeting stakeholders will be provided innovation system pilot which is relating to complete research of innovation in ANU Sport. After this approval of stakeholders for implantation of such innovation in ANU Sport will be obtained. In this meeting, the company will tell the benefits of innovation system for the company as well as stakeholders. Further consent of stakeholders will be obtained whether they are in favor or not. If any feedback if received by the stakeholders then this feedback will be implemented in the innovation system pilot. After getting their favorable response of stakeholders, this innovation will be implemented as per the planning in ANU Sport (Mikhalkina and Cabantous, 2015).

ANU Sport is a non-profit organization which is involved in the promotion of sporting activities. Major sources of income of ANU Sport includes non-student member fee, facility usage charges, and other short courses. The main aim of ANU Sport is to promote and provide affordable sporting opportunities to its members. Innovation goals of ANU Sport include meeting the expectations of its stakeholders through its products and services. Key stakeholders of ANU Sport includes its members, staff and another team which is involved in its business (Ionescu and Ionescu, 2015).

ANU Sport consulted to its stakeholders regarding the new innovation system where stakeholders suggested some changes that are to be made in the innovation system. Further those changes were implemented in the innovation system. This innovation system included the outcomes for monitoring that is related to the implementation of innovation in ANU Sport.

In the words of Lopez, et. al. (2015), innovation leadership is a technique where leadership styles are used to influence the employees towards bringing their ideas which lead to innovation. In ANU Sport, innovation leadership was included leadership and management activities. Members in ANU Sport were encouraged to bring their ideas. ANU Sport established trusting relationships with its participants. The main focus on ANU Sport is on innovation through complying with organizational approaches, policies, and procedures.

There were innovation needs in ANU Sport in order to meet the expectations of its stakeholders through providing them products and services as per their demand (Ionescu and Ionescu, 2015). ANU Sport always indulged itself in encouraging participation of its members in idea generation and evaluation. For implementing this innovation in ANU Sport, it first obtained the consent of it stakeholders for implanting such innovation in the business of ANU Sport.

ANU Sport is involved with up to date professional development so that it is able to provide timely and relevant information to its staff. There is proper mentoring for idea generation and evaluation in ANU Sport so that they are able to actively share their information, knowledge, and skills through innovation towards the growth and development of ANU Sport (Lopez, et. al., 2015).
