Leadership Models

Leadership is the process of managing people or individual at the workplace. we will discuss leadership models for management  challenges in this blog. Different leaders adopts different leadership style i.e. leadership model is the approach that is used by the leader or managers of the organisation to perform their duties. Following are some leadership models that is used by the leaders of the organisation:

Leadership or Managerial Grid-Under this theory, behaviour of leaders is important concern for the organisation. Concern for people and concern for task are two aspects of managerial grid that leaders shall adopt. Consideration (behaviour, relationship, etc.) and initiating structure (task oriented, organisation and scheduling of work flow) are two behaviours under managerial grid that leaders shall implement. Behaviour identified while leading is employee orientation (concern for people) and production orientation (concern for tasks).

Situation 1 - high task, high relationship

Situation 2-high task, low relationship

Situation 3- low task, high relationship

Situation 4-low task, low relationship

Four Framework Approach-Under this framework leaders behave in either of four frameworks i.e. political framework, structural framework, symbolic framework and human resource framework.

  1. Structural Framework- Leaders emphasis on strategy, implementation and adaptability
  2. Human Resource Framework-Communication with employees and other team members, promote active participation of team members, information sharing and demoting decision making process.
  3. Political Framework-These types of leaders has clear mindset regarding need & wants and what they actually get.
  4. Symbolic Framework-These types of leaders places themselves in the centre point of the organisation and then communicate what is required from the team.

Situational Leadership-In this leadership model two major sections are covered i.e. supervision (supervise team members and guide them for their betterment) and arousal (motivation to change with the changing environment) in the business organisation.

Leadership V/S Management Behaviour

Management is the ultimate administrator of business organisation and leader is just a part of organisation i.e. innovator in terms of operations and behaviour management of its team. Management is responsible for the development of plans and budgets. While on the other hand, leaders create vision and sub-plan to achieve them. Another behavioural different is management is the ultimate boss and leaders are coach in the business organisation.

Complementary Roles of Management and Leaders

Apart from above mentioned differences there are some complementary roles between management and leaders that I have learned. They are as follows:

Motivation and Inspiration- Both management and leaders are required to motivate and inspire its team to achieve organisational objectives. Only difference is the level of motivation and inspiration between management and leaders.

Value Creation-Value creation in the business organisation is the most desirable factor that shall be taken into account by both management and leaders. I have learned that both management and leader support value creation at different levels.
