Communication Theories Assignment

It is very tough to envisage an occupation in which a person generally does not have to communicate with some other persons. In an organization the skills of organizational as well as inter personal communication are used every day on a huge basis. These skills are generally used for dealing with grievances from the end of a client who may be very demanding, to convince the supervisor to provide some flexibility in terms of time or work, or to help the colleagues who are passing through tough times. The several existing interpersonal as well as organizational communication theories help us in making us understand what are the ways in which various kinds of professional associations are started as well as sustained, what are the effective and efficient ways through which these associations can be maintained for a longer period of time and why do persons who are associated with us behave in unexpected manners and what are the steps those we need to take under such situation.
The definition of business communication has been given by several academicians in several ways. Some of the previous researchers and practitioners have defined the process of communication on the basis of the situation in which the mode of association is being done and the number of people who are taking effective part in that particular process (Miller, 1978). With the help of the definition given by Miller in the year of 1978 we can say that the process of communication takes place between two persons if their physical proximity is close enough. Through this particular process of communication the two participants present in the process can also provide instantaneous reactions and make use of several senses. Some other previous academicians define the process of interpersonal communication depending on the extent of the “personalizes,” which is present in the process of communication. This personalizes has been defined as the quality of that particular communication which is perceived by the participants involved in that process. Peter who published his work in the year of 1974 has stressed on the point that the process of communication is essentially private and it takes place between persons who are well known to each other. Another approach which has been used for defining the process of communication by the past research proposal is the goals approach. In this particular theory it has been stated that the process of interpersonal communication is based on the need of defining or obtaining some individual goals with the help of the communication process with some other people.
Theories of CommunicationFollowing the discussion on the theories related to the topic of communication:
- Constructivism: This is the theory of communication which concentrates on the capability of the communicators to distinguish between the ways different people understands different things.
- Cognitive- Behavioural Theory: This theory says that the process through which persons interpret or understand occurrences and scenarios intercedes the way they feel and act as the subsequence.
- Social Judgment Theory: This particular theoretical framework postulates that people react to messages with freedom of reception, refusal, or non obligation. Based upon the involvement of the ego (i.e., to what extent a particular matter is imperative for them), persons can be swayed along a particular leeway.
- Elaboration Likelihood Model: This theory postulates that persons react to communications in two mutually exclusive ways: the explanation path or the secondary path. The former one is connected with reflectively feeling about, assimilating, and using external data in a manner which is reasonable and objective. Most of the communications are assimilated through the secondary peripheral path which aims at the ultimate goal of keeping away from overload of outside information.
- The Extended Parallel Process Model: This theory says that actions of an individual is motivated by threats (e.g., heavy exposure of unprotected skin to the sun may cause cancer for the person) and that apparent effectiveness (i.e., assurance in someone’s capacity to seize suggested deed) helps in defining if the suggested work done (e.g., using a hat or wearing sunblock lotion when under the sun) helps in controlling the threat or the fear.
- The Spiral of Silence: This particular framework says that the panic of segregation makes individuals stay mum about opinions which may represent the minority. These individuals sometimes even change their mind forcefully to accept the opinion which represent majority in spite of individual and idealistic apprehensions. The media can propagate this oppression of outlooks through regular recurrence or reporting of some particular ideas.
- Theory of Reasoned Action: This theory postulates that actions of an individual can be predicted by purposes with respect to that behaviour. These purposes are subsequently foreseen by outlooks toward the deeds and by prejudiced standards. These prejudiced standards are forecasted by a set of beliefs which are normative and the impetus to meet the terms of those beliefs which are normative.
- The Agenda-Setting Function: This particular framework says that the group of media robustly manipulates and changes individuals’ considerations and the main concerns which they shape. As an example we can cite the following situation. When a particular health hazard gets significant concentration from the mass media, the people start believing that the particular problem is a vital health care.

Starting from enhancing confidence to being motivated, each and every aspect of a successful career can touched upon by the communication skills. Following is the discussion about the ways through which what I have learnt about effective communication skills may enhance my performance in my future career which is Civil Engineering. Since a civil engineer needs to work in a group which comprises of other engineers as well, it is imperative for him or her to follow the golden rules of effective communication.
Boosting of Confidence
Through the process of learning the nuances of effective communication skills will surely improve the self confidence which I have in me. With the help of these effective communication skills I will feel empowered with my skills with respect to verbal communication. Communication can be very important to work with the subordinates as well as the superiors in the field of civil engineering.
Motivation can play a big role in the professional life of a civil engineer to surge ahead. It has been identified that learning of effective communication skills can make a person more confident and capable of better communication. This in turn will make me feel good about myself and my skill set. It is possible that this feel good factor will motivate me to enhance my skills analysis more. Expressing ideas will be much easier for me with the help of these effective communication skills.
Overcome Fear of Speaking
It has been seen that many people fail to progress in their respective careers due to the fear of speaking. But this training with effective verbal communication skills, the problem of speech anxiety or fear of speaking in public will cease to be in me in my future career. Due to the fact that I will be able to converse comfortably and clearly, it will help in getting past of the fear of making mistakes during my conversation with some other person.
Improve Your Lifestyle
The acquisition of effective verbal communication skills will also help me in making the standard of my lifestyle much higher in terms of factors related to personal, professional as well as social life. The processes which generally are feared by people who do not have effective verbal communication skills like having informal communication with strangers etc will not be in me anymore.
All of these factors taken together will certainly help me in becoming successful in my future career.References
