Businesses now operate in a globalised and highly connected multi-layered business environment, where the global and the local impacts are increasingly intertwined. Such an environment presents many intercultural and global challenges, and is typified by ambiguity and complexity. As the managers and decision makers of the future, An Introduction to International Business will help students understand current trends in International Business, prepare for work in multi-layered environments, and to understand the need to be flexible and adaptable to change, both in the domestic and international contexts.
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the key concepts, theories in international business, and the contemporary international business environment. It will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the nature of the global business environment and international business. Importantly, through considering a range of firms from the international business environment, reflecting 'real world' activities this module will assist students to take the first steps towards self-confidence with regard to international business and global citizenship.
Knowledge And Understanding:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the foundational definitions, concepts and theories underpinning International Business
- Understand the nature of the international activities of a range of enterprises (both MNEs and SMEs)
- Develop an awareness of the global business environment and current trends
- As a result of the above, comment authoritatively on how understanding International Business can be used to improve competitive advantage of enterprises
- Critically apply theories and concepts to International Business issues
- Construct and defend a reasoned argument in class presentations and discussions.
- Be creative in their approach to studying topics in International Business, including thinking/problem solving around International Business issues
- Develop their learning through the cross fertilisation, and reflection upon ideas from their own and others’ experiences of working in different sectors.
- Apply knowledge of the International Business Environment and organisational practice creatively to problem solving situations.
- Recognise and utilise their own and others contributions in group processes.
- Participate in academic, ethical and value discussions that develop from topics studied

A number of pertinent topics will be explored and discussed with an international focus, including emerging economies. (Students are expected to read in preparation for participation in each session).
The introductory section (weeks 1-3) of the module focuses on the international dimension and the organisation.
The case studies and Country focus may be subject to change as new materials become available, students will be advised of the exact listing and multi media links through Blackboard, in week one of a new semester. In addition, students will be asked to use case studies as the starting point to envisage or predict future scenarios.
LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS
Concepts and theories will be presented through a combination of lecture and tutorial activities, as well as practical exercises, with directed readings, multimedia resources, country focus sessions, guest lecture sessions and case studies.
In tutorial time, topics will be explored and developed through a mix of case studies, student-led presentations and/or discussions. In order to assist students adopt a global outlook, case studies will be drawn from varying international contexts, and each week will have a different country focus slot, as part of the tutorial series.
Blackboard (Ulster’s virtual learning environment) is a key aspect of the learning and teaching approach at UBS. It provides an invaluable support to the student learning experience and can be accessed through the Student Portal. Students should familiarise themselves with this important resource at the earliest time possible, as it will allow access to learning resources and module information. The site will also serve as an important communication tool for the module.
On an on-going basis, topical new articles, links and readings will be added to the course materials, and made available in Blackboard. The module therefore adopts a blended learning approach.
Each student will complete the following assignment (3000 maximum) on a topic chosen from the assignment list – indicative topics include (and others will be added, to refresh the assessment strategy as required)
- A company is considering moving production to a location in a developing country (for example, Mexico), but is concerned about political instability. Critically evaluate what particular aspects of the country’s political structure and processes should it take into account when assessing political risk?
- For a global company from a western economy contemplating a joint venture with a foreign partner in China, identify and discuss what are the cultural difficulties likely to be encountered, and what are your recommendations for how to enable the joint venture to succeed?
- The growth in bilateral trade and regional integration agreements is a growing feature of world trade. How can this growth be explained, and critically evaluate what are the implications for internationalbusiness.
- A PEST analysis was designed to illuminate specific dimensions of a national environment. Discuss how can it be adapted to take into account other dimensions and broader scope, bringing in regional and global impacts?
Students will be asked to reflect upon their personal learning in this module, and consider the following:
- How has the module deepened their personal understanding of International Business
- What were the module highlights for them , and why?
- What they would do differently next time,
Changes in the international business environment are rapid and often unexpected; keeping up to date is imperative. Therefore, students are encouraged to read widely for this module, including popular sources such as newspapers and other published news media. Academic journals and books that will supplement the core materials of the module should also be drawn on.
