Health promotion Assignment Brief
Topic 6: Attitude Change and Health Promotion
Binge drinking is a critical problem for young people as it is a widely accepted part of youth culture. Binge drinking has been defined in numerous ways including “levels of drinking at risk, or high risk of short-term harm” (Australian Medical Association, 2015) or as consuming five or more drinks on a single occasion (Lange et al., 2002). Binge drinking has several short-term health consequences including hangover, memory loss, vomiting, shakiness, and increased risk of injury and/or traffic fatality. There is also evidence to suggest that binge drinking is associated with increased violence, engagement in unwanted and/or risky sexual behaviours, and psychological issues such as lowered self-esteem and conflict within interpersonal relationships (ReachOut.com, 2016). ?
Identify the importance of the health issue being addressed, identify and briefly describe selected resource. Name and explain the persuasive route(s) being used and provide 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses for the resource, with supporting evidence, followed by detailed commentary on likely effectiveness, with supporting evidence. Use 2 or more reference sources. Provide competent APA citation and referencing.
Topic 7: Substance Abuse and Smoking
There are many reasons why people start smoking and further reasons why they continue to smoke.
a) For this task you need to construct a case study describing Alex, a 42 year old smoker. In your case study, you should incorporate at least three reasons that led Alex to start smoking and three reasons why she continues to smoke. For each reason that you illustrate in your case study, follow with the appropriate psychological term(s) that apply to that reason in brackets as demonstrated in the sample case study that follows.
Sample case study
Joan, who is facing a treatment decision for breast cancer. She has collected and reviewed some relevant disease information (information-seeking, informational control), has discussed her options with her family and some friends from a breast cancer support group (social support), and has established with her doctor that she would like to be actively involved in all treatment related decisions (patient focused/centred care). She believes that she can complete any chemotherapy regime required (self-efficacy), however she has concerns regarding whether chemotherapy is actually needed if her cancer is localised and her surgery is successful. She is weighing up whether the costs of chemotherapy, the psychological, physical and financial costs, are worth the slight improvement in prognosis (potential rational non-adherence).
b) While many individuals attempt to quit smoking, the process is often difficult and the chance of relapse can be quite high. Name two factors that may place an individual at risk of a relapse in smoking behaviour and briefly outline an appropriate an action strategy that might intervene in this process.?
Develop case study that outlines 3 reasons for commencing and 3 reasons for maintaining smoking behaviour, using appropriate psychological terms. Suggest 3 factors for relapse and provide an appropriate, detailed, evidence-based outline of an intervention strategy. Use 2 or more reference sources. Provide competent APA citation and referencing.
Topic 8: Alcohol Use and Abuse
Indigenous Australian health care have lower alcohol consumption rates compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts, (48% and 62% respectively in the National Health care in 2004-2005 (Caltabiano, Sarafino, & Byrne, 2008)). However, there is the general belief that alcohol consumption is a significant issue for Indigenous Australians. Why?
While overall consumption rates may be lower, the problem is that when Indigenous people drink, they tend to consume much higher levels of alcohol, at levels considered harmful to health, hence the problem is exacerbated (Caltabiano et al., 2008). There are also a range of social factors that contribute to the problem, for example, the rate of alcohol consumption is much greater for Indigenous people living in remote and very remote areas (e.g. up to 92% of drinkers consuming unsafe levels) (Caltabiano et al., 2008).
Identify and provide detailed description of 3 strategies to address alcohol use among Indigenous Australians with supporting evidence. Provide a discussion of effectiveness of each strategy with supporting evidence. Suggest 3 potential improvements linking specifically to the strategies outlined. Use 3 or more reference sources. Provide competent APA citation and referencing.
