Section 1: Stimulate The Child’s Use and Understanding of Language
1. Describe three activities that could be implemented to help children develop their language and communication skills. The activities must be developmentally suitable for four year olds. Be specific, including step-by-step details of the activities you identify. Explain how each activity/ opportunity is suitable for children aged four. 1. You are working with a child called Rachael. You realise that you know very little about Rachael’s interests. What should you do to learn about her interests?

Recall a time when you were involved in a discussion with a group of people. The discussion might have occurred at school, in a work setting or in a social setting. Answer the following questions:

Identify five things that you might say/ talk about when interacting with a three-year-old child. You will need to take into account stages of language development when completing the exercise. While responses might be similar to those presented in the text, they should not be the same.
1: Identify a time where you did not actively listen to a person speaking to you and answer the questions:

1: Write a transcript of a two-way conversation that you could act out with another adult to demonstrate the mechanics of two-way communication to children. The transcript should be half a page in length. Upload your transcript for assessment.
2: Describe how infants and babies communicate and how you can promote two-way conversation with them.
While children’s words and phrases can be expanded on in a natural style of conversation, there are also a number of games that can be played to expand a child’s vocabulary. Identify one such game and give detailed instructions of how to play it. You will also need to identify any materials needed to play the game.
Section 2: Support the Child’s Skills in their Own (Non English) Language as Relevant
You are approached by the parent of a child you care for whose name is Antonio Giordano. Antonio’s first language is Italian and his mother is keen for him to retain this language but is unsure of what she can do to make this happen. What would you advise her to do?
Create a list of Do’s and Don’ts that could be followed when communicating with people from different cultural backgrounds to show respect for language and cultural background.
1: Locate a bilingual book and answer the following questions:
a. What is the name of the book?
b. What languages are presented in the book (is it written in more than one language)?
c. What is the book about?
d. How might you use the book in a child care setting?
e. What are the advantages of these types of books?
f. Do you think the book is of a high quality? Explain.
2: It is likely that you will work with children whose first language is not English. It will be easier to communicate with them if you know some key words and phrases in their mother tongue. Undertake your own research and find the Italian and Cantonese translations for the words and phrases found here.
Identify a cultural experience and explain how you would use the experience as an opportunity to develop children’s language and communication skills. Provide a detailed response—give examples.
Section 3: Contribute to Assessment of Language and Communication Skills and Planning of Appropriate Support Strategies
Undertake your own research and identify other reasons (not already discussed in the text) that children might have difficulty learning to speak. You must identify a minimum of three additional reasons.

Undertake your own research and identify five differences between Aboriginal English and Standard English.
1: Write three goals that could be used in an IEP. The goals must relate to language and communication development. Identify the targeted learning outcome, the condition and the criterion in each of your goals. Your goals must be different to those presented in the text.
2: Write a job advertisement to invite applications for a speech therapist to work with children. Include details of the role (eg the duties the successful applicant will have) and required qualifications, skills and experience.
You have been involved in creating and implementing an IEP for a child named Maggie who was identified as having expressive language disorder. The plan has been running for three months and you are due to attend a meeting to discuss the child’s progress and review the plan. You will be asked for your opinion on whether or not the plan is working as intended and whether it could be improved in any way. What should you do to prepare for the meeting?

Create an information booklet that could be distributed to parents. The booklet should explain how parents can help to foster their children’s language and communication development. The booklet should include information about assisting children to become proficient in Standard English. It should also explain to parents how to maintain their child’s first language if their first language is not English.
The booklet should:
- demonstrate a deep understanding of course content
- cover the topics in the course
- provide practical advice as to how to foster children’s language and communication development
- include appropriate illustrations/ charts
- be written in plain English so that it is accessible to everyone
- be visually pleasing to encourage parents to read it
